Fantastic Negrito's latest recording effort is Grandfather Courage, an acoustic version of his acclaimed fourth studio album White Jesus Black Problems (Storefront Records, 2022), which earned him a 2023 Grammy Awards nomination in the Best American Roots Performance category for the single Oh Betty.
Part love story, part history lesson, the extraordinary White Jesus Black Problems is a compelling ode to the strength of family and the enduring resilience of humankind. Inspired by the interracial-and illegal-love story of his ancestors, a white servant girl and a black slave in 1750s Virginia, the album's tracks are bold and thought-provoking in addressing themes such as racism, capitalism, and the true meaning of freedom, without ever losing sight of the desire and determination underlying the narrative. Each track alone can sum up the meaning of the entire album, but analyzing the album and the related film as a whole leads to a much more transcendent experience, one that challenges knowledge about our identity, where we come from, and where we are headed.
