SMUM 5tet

The ensemble founded by the music director of the SMUM School of Modern Music, Giorgio Meuwly, will perform on Sunday, July 14, in the beautiful setting of Ciani Park in Lugano to celebrate the 30th year of activity of the School of Modern Music. Training:

George Meuwly, guitar

Hiromi's musical journey has continuously evolved since her debut album "Another Mind" in 2003, blurring the boundaries between jazz and classical, composition and improvisation. Her latest venture, "Sonicwonderland," marks a bold detour into heavier, funkier territories. Bringing together a new quartet with bassist Hadrien Feraud, drummer Gene Coye and trumpeter Adam O'Ferrill, Hiromi embarked on a sonic adventure inspired by her vivid imagination.

The genesis of "Sonicwonderland" began with a desire to write music tailored to Feraud's bass playing, leading to the formation of this dynamic ensemble. Seeking warmth and humor in the drums, Hiromi recruited Coye, whose relationship with Feraud added depth to their collaboration. Completing the lineup with O'Ferrill's distinctive trumpet sound, Hiromi found her imagined band members come to life.

The album's opening track, "Wanted," reflects the order in which Hiromi discovered her bandmates, setting the stage for the eclectic journey that follows. Embracing electronic timbres with keyboards, Hiromi's "Sonicwonderland" ventures into new sonic territories, expanding on ideas explored during the pandemic through her "One Minute Portrait" series on Instagram.

Presenting collaborations with longtime friends such as singer Oli Rockberger, the album captures the energy of live performances, recorded in just three and a half days at the Skywalker Sound Stage. Featuring illustrations by renowned illustrator Lou Beach, "Sonicwonderland" offers a visual representation of her vibrant sound.

As Hiromi continues to push musical boundaries, she invites both longtime fans and newcomers to join her on this exciting musical journey. A native of Hamamatsu, Japan, Hiromi's prolific career has garnered her worldwide acclaim, from jazz festivals to the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics.

In summary, "Sonicwonderland" reflects Hiromi's relentless exploration of sound, rooted in her passion for creativity and relationship with listeners.

Nolan Quinn Quintet

The group reflects the historically established formation of the jazz quintet and presents repertoire and styles of interpretation ranging from traditional jazz jargon to current jazz with binary rhythms, from hard bop to Broadway music, from blues to backbeat. The compositions are singable, catchy and simple, resting on the foundation of harmony in Western music and finding maturity in the musicians' interpretations. All improvisers inspire with their spontaneity. The trumpet allows a wide variety of tones and expressions to be used: the growl is followed by a cantabile, the sixteenth phrase by a reflective pause.

In Switzerland, the jazz quintet performs regularly at clubs, festivals and private events throughout the year. The concerts offer audiences a candid perspective on ten years of quintet work, showcasing the personalities of the individual artists and their instrumental sophistication. The most significant pieces from the repertoire are played, almost exclusively original compositions, which have been well received both in live performances and on the radio.

ESTIVAL LINE UP - 12.07.2024:

20:45 Gil Evans Remembered
22:45 Bokanté
00:30 Tom Walker

In the international music ensemble Bokanté, bonding is the foundation on which everything is built. Among the members themselves, ties span nearly two decades. But externally, the formation of the group was born out of a desire to connect with society and the most pressing problems it faces. With the sounds of the delta and the desert, the unusual but evocative instrumentation blends musical worlds to convey an urgent message of social awareness against the rising tide of human exclusion and indifference.

The word bokanté means "exchange" in Creole, the language of singer Malika Tirolien, who grew up on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. Now living in Montreal, she is among musicians from four continents, each with their own experience and knowledge of music beyond their place of origin. Five-time Grammy-winning guitarists Michael League, Chris McQueen and Bob Lanzetti (all of Snarky Puppy), percussion legend Jamey Haddad (Paul Simon, Sting), pedal steel and lap steel virtuoso Roosevelt Collier (Lee Boys, Karl Denson) and renowned percussionists Keita Ogawa (Banda Magda, Yo-Yo Ma) and Weedie Braimah (Christian Scott) join forces to create a diverse ensemble full of groove, melody and soul.

Gil Evans Remembered

Here is a fascinating project by Pete Levin, a former member of the famous Gil Evans Orchestra, which performed in the 1970s and 1980s. A few years ago, Pete gathered an "all-star" group of Gil's band alumni and promoted a show at a large New York City club. The concert was professionally recorded, both in audio and video. His more recent efforts to take the band on tour were halted by the pandemic.

After the pandemic, he will resume the project in 2024, with the release of an audio recording and DVD of the New York show. He tentatively named the group "Gil Evans Remembered," recalling the years when the band played every Monday night at New York's Sweet Basil jazz club and won Grammys for the albums "Plays The Music of Jimi Hendrix" (RCA) and "Live At Sweet Basil" (King).
